Since 2005,an increasing number of African refugees have been seeking safety within Israel's borders. Brutal treatment in Egypt has pushed the mostly Muslim refugees to cross the perilous Sinai Desert into the Jewish State. The refugees, mainly from war-torn Eritrea and Sudan, have caught the Israeli government off guard. Israel currently has no policy regarding non-Jewish refugees. Not wanting to return the refugees to dangerous circumstances, but unwilling and unable to become a haven for hundreds of thousands of displaced Africans, Israel does not have a solution. The refugees have been left in a state of purgatory, with little assitance. Where the government has failed, NGO's and activists like Daniel Cherrin have stepped in. Cherrin, a young American who recently moved to Israel, started the Fugee Fridays initiative with his brother and two friends.
Well done, Daniel Cherrin, Lili, and the others. So important to raise awareness.
Some of the shelters in the video are already empty. The refugees had to run away (rent problems, police, who knows).
Refugees here live in such uncertainty and fear. This is so terrible, that after running for their lives and losing their relatives they have to face this cruelty in Israel.
Now the Israeli army is sending some of the refugees back! Let us hope the public in Israel will not let this continue.
This is a wonderful project and idea. I commend you for your volunteer work.
